About Diploma courses in Australia

Career outcomes

Diplomas (AQF Level 5) are widely used as vocational qualifications and as pathway awards into bachelor degrees. Graduates enter technician, associate-professional and supervisory roles in business, IT, hospitality, community services and design — or articulate into the second year of a related bachelor with credit transfer where formal pathway agreements exist.

Popular providers

Diplomas are delivered by TAFEs, private RTOs and some universities' pathway colleges. Many large private CRICOS colleges specialise in diploma-to-degree packaging. Compare government vs private providers on duration, fees, work components and articulation guarantees.

Duration & indicative fees

Typical CRICOS diploma durations are 52–104 weeks. Indicative tuition for international students often ranges from AUD 8,000–25,000 for the full programme, but packages that include English + diploma + bachelor can be substantially higher overall.

Registration & regulation

VET diplomas are regulated under ASQA (or state VET regulators where applicable) and must appear on CRICOS for international enrolment. Pathway claims should be verified in writing with both the diploma provider and the destination university.

Diploma-to-degree articulation: what to check

  1. Get articulation in writing — ask for the current agreement, not only marketing claims of “guaranteed entry”.
  2. Check the destination bachelor’s CRICOS code and that the university still holds registration.
  3. Confirm credit transfer unit-by-unit — “up to 12 months credit” is not the same as automatic second-year entry.
  4. Read the refund policy if the package breaks mid-enrolment; ESOS protections apply but you should understand them first.
